PRIMARY PACKAGING

Primary packaging is the first layer of packaging around a product. Crucial for keeping the product safe from contamination, damage and environmental factors, packaging design also has the power to make a lasting impression on consumers.

Food and Beverage

For this sector, the main role of primary packaging is to preserve flavour and nutritional value.

From glass or ceramic bottles to aluminium cans, from plastic containers to fibre-based packaging with moisture and grease barriers, there are many solutions for keeping food and beverages tasting fresh and being safe to consume.

Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics

Product stability, safety and security are the primary packaging priorities for these categories.

Sealed blister packs, pump dispensers and glass vials can protect sensitive medications and skincare products from air, bacteria and moisture.

Electronics and Non-Foods

Primary packaging must be durable enough to prevent impact or moisture damage to electronic devices and other non-food items, ensuring they remain in pristine condition during storage and transport.

Flexibility and durability are key, and modern fibre-based solutions can meet these requirements without using plastic blisters.

How are primary and secondary packaging different?

Primary packaging directly encloses and protects the product: for example, glass, paper or plastic.

Secondary packaging is an additional layer on top of the primary packaging. It may be used for extra protection, for brand communication and/or for packaging small multiples of product for storage and transportation.

Both types are important, but primary packaging helps to maintain essential product integrity.

Which material should I use for primary packaging?

Material choice should be determined by the type, size and weight of the product and the level of protection it requires, as well as brand personality and corporate sustainability goals.

Inappropriate or inferior materials, even if deemed environmentally friendly, can lead to product damage and increased waste, which utlimately reduces overall sustainability.

Where appropriate, fibre-based packaging is the most easily recyclable and flexible choice for most markets, and suits a wide range of products.
